The Sultan’s Palace or Keraton of yogyakarta was constructed in between 1756-1790 by the founder of Jogja, Sultan Hamengku Buwono I. The palace is indeed the most grand and elegant architecture in Jogja. The construction is rich with interior ornamental items such as wood-carved, artistic glass, 3-dimension representation and so on. Some ornaments are only decorative, but some have symbolic meaning. One of the symbolic interior ornaments is prajacihna. The ornament, 3-dimension representation which has image composition of a couple wings, a throne and HB initial in Javanese alphabet, is in fact the symbol of the Kingdom.
In the front of the gate which would connected to the other parts of building, one could find a couple of giant statues called Gupala guards. The statues are perceived as the protectors of the palace from any harmful or evil. In the historical progress, the palace was not only the royal resident and the center of power, but it was also the center of Indonesian fight for freedom in the early of Republic Indonesia independence.
The construction of the Keraton complex, considered as the inner point of the entire kingdom not only as the royal residence, is believed to be a model of Javanese cosmos. Each parts of the building, the gateways, the pavilions, exterior objects such as the courtyards, the trees and fields have explicit symbolic significance. Thoughtfully, by structuring the palace in that way, the court and the kingdom could be harmonized with the divine forces of the universe.
