Arya Wisata Yogyakata

Built in 1758, under the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, Water Castle (Taman Sari), beautiful garden in literary meaning, was formerly the place for Sultan and his family to take pleasure. It actually took eleven years to finish the construction. The Portuguese style of architecture is dominant on this site. One of the most interesting objects in this place is Gemuling Well. The object is two levels building with the second floor built underground. Previously, the place was the pray room for Sultan. This room could be reached through underground canal. In fact, many parts of Water Castle (Taman Sari) were indeed connected by canals, tunnels and underground passageways. It was believed that those ways were consecutively prepared as safe ways to escape in case there was enemy attacking the complex.
Although the site is open for public now, some parts of the site are still considered to be sacred. One of them is the Ledoksari Garden. The place is the private room of Sultanes.
