About an hour drive to northwest of Yogyakarta, Borobudur is the most celebrated ancient monumen in Indonesia. The temple is also considered  as one of the Seven Wonders in the earth. History said that the temple was erected by dynasty of Sailendra in between 750-842 AD. Its overalheight was 42 meters, but is only 34.5, now after the restoration and had the dimension of 123x123 m. The extraordinary temple had 10 floors: Hhumtacabharabudara, the mountain of accumulation virtue in the 10 stages of Bodhistva. Undeniable, this monumental architecture was built with a huge workforce; sclupturs, plesterers, master mansions and painters that must have been labored in the tropical heat to shift and carve the 60.000 cu m of stones.
In 1814, Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles founded it in ruined condition. The massive restoration project began from 1905-1910 led by Dr. Tb. Van Erp. Between 1973-1983, the second restoration to rescue Borobudur was carried out with the help of UNESCO.
Today, Borobudur is one of the best-known tourism destination. It would not be exaggerated if we choose borobudur to be our target to visit. The temple on the other hand, will bring us to the knowledge of human civilization in 8th-9th century. It is better to go early in the morning on vacation to get a chance of seeing the monument free of huge milling crowds. Having finished exploring and discovering the magnificent architecture, next drive back to Yogyakarta.
