Built in large landscape areas, the temple is the biggest Hindu’s temple in Indonesia. The Siwagrha Sanskrit, a Sanskrit which is believed having connected with the temple, stated that the complex of the temple was inaugurated in 778 Saka year (865 AD) by Rakai Pikatan, king from the Sanjaya dynasty, The temple is said as the symbolic of Old Hindu’s Mataram Kingdom triumph. In fact, showing her grandiose, complexity and comprehensive elements of the building structure which reflect the unity of Hindu’s Mandala, this temple is considered to be a kingdom temple level.
The complex consists of there courtyards. The main temple is located in the inner courtyard and surrounded by several small temples called Perwara temples. In the main complex, there are three shrines, dedicated to Hindu’s Trinity, Ciwa, Vhisnu and Brahma. Each shrine is facing a smaller shrine of their vehicles. The cow Nandi is the vehicle of Ciwathe, the destroyer god, the eagle is vehicle of Vhisnuthe, the guardian god and the Swan is Brahmathe’s (god of creator). On the wall of Brahmana and ciwa shrine, the Ramayana relief are carved, while the Kresnayana relief is carved in the Vhisnu temple.
