About 15 km from Solo drive to Sangiran, is an excursion back in time. The Sangiran is extremely fascinating area which is rich in fossils of all types. The museum site is a simple one-room affair. In the central case are replicas of skull fragment and jawbone of Java man (the originals are stored in Bandung, West Java).  Other  cases  house  fossil  shells and  animal’  bones,  including
enormous 4 meters tusks from mastodon which must measured 11  ms head  to  tail. The  fossils are in age between 1,200,000 to 5,000,000 years. Artifacts from prehistoric settlements round the collection. And upstairs is a viewing room overlooking the valley. The place will bring your mind to think how fascinating it was that man’s ancestors lived here hundred of thousands of years ago. As the guard to point out the spot down the road where landslides continue to expose fossils, chiefly seashells.
